FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY WOULD I CHOOSE URINE DRUG TESTING?

Urine drug testing is the most common sample in New Zealand workplaces for many reasons:

  • Lower kit cost than oral fluid (saliva)

  • Identifies habitual (chronic) and recent drug users

  • Robust Australian New Zealand Standard

  • Often employee contracts specifically dictate only urine testing permitted

Urine drug testing is a well-established practice in today’s NZ workplaces and is mandatory for all employees working in safety sensitive roles.

Urine drug testing is well understood, reasonably economical and well served by Australian New Zealand Standards AS/NZS4308:2008 and accredited laboratory confirmatory testing services, ESR and CHL.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS TAKE?

Each appointment will take approximately 30-45 minutes.  Most of the time involves completing required paperwork.  The testing and result itself only takes about 10 minutes if negative.  If there is a non-negative result, the sample is sent away to ESR for confirmation and there's extra paperwork involved.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Urine drug testing at your preferred location from $99 for one person.  Saliva testing from $129 per person.  Discounts for extra employees.  Travel fees may apply outside Te Anau.  Alcohol breathalyser testing - free if same time as drug testing, otherwise from $10 per person.

WHY WOULD I CHOOSE SALIVA DRUG TESTING?

  • No need for toilet/bathroom

  • Less invasive testing

  • Less potential for drug tampering (cheating)

  • Targets recent drug use

Oral fluid testing and new New Zealand Standards for Oral Fluid Drug Testing is specifically directed at the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluid recently used – and cutoff levels target the acute impairment period.

Testing is undertaken in accordance with AS/NZS4760:2019.
